/NOVOSTIVL/ A car hit a female Amur tiger to death on one of the highways in the Nanai district of the Khabarovsk territory. The issue of initiating a case on the death of a red book animal is being resolved, the press service of the Amur tiger center reported.
"According to preliminary data, the driver of the car at night did not have time to react in time to the predator on the road and hit it. The circumstances of the accident are being established and an investigation is underway, " the report says.
It is clarified that the driver of the car himself contacted the police after the incident.
In the Russian far East, the largest tiger species, the Amur tiger, is listed in the international Red book. In 1947, the USSR banned the hunting of Amur tigers, when there were no more than 40 individuals left. According to the latest data, 550 - 580 of these predators now live in the regions of the far Eastern Federal district, which is 95% of the world population.
